The chairman of the National Commission on Farmers, MS Swaminathan has called for "more crop per drop" while emphasising on new water efficient technologies in the country. Under the Bharat Nirman Programme, the government has already decided to irrigate an additional 1 crore hectare.
Speaking at the International Conference on Plasticulture and Precision Farming in the Capital, he said that the crop production can be multiplied with technological advantages in a farmer friendly manner. u
He emphasised that farmers should go in for training programmes to be able to successfully implement new technologies. Government and financial institutions should organise self-help groups (SHGs) to help farmers access technology at the community level, Mr Swaminathan said.
The Union water resources minister, Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, called for development of region-specific technologies for optimum results and benefits to farmers. He also inaugurated an exhibition of various drip, sprinklers and micro irrigation technologies.
