Holland donates sh8b for ICT

THE Netherlands government recently provided 4m Euros (about sh8b) to four public universities for training women in Information and communication Technology (ICT), the Netherlands ambassador has said.

Brandt Yoka said the beneficiaries would be Makerere, Kyambogo Gulu and Mbarara University of science and Technology. He said the donation would benefit those who missed direct admission to public universities.

“Our objective is to promote gender balance, women empowerment and to contribute to the Government’s plan to increase the number of women participating in science,” Yoka said.

She said this during a graduation ceremony for 95 women who were awarded certificates in ICT from Makerere University on Friday at Makerere University Guest house.

The Netherlands embassy and Barclays bank sponsored the women for a one-month training in ICT at the Faculty of Information Technology at Makerere University.

Livingstone Luboobi, the university vice-chancellor, said in a statement read by deputy vice-chancellor, David Bakibinga, that the university was committed to extending ICT skills to all people in the country.
