It was a regulation satellite launch, but one that signals a great leap for Indian TV broadcasting. Insat 4-A, India's heaviest and most powerful communication satellite, was launched into orbit from the European spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana on Thursday.
The mission's main role will be to provide direct-to-home telecasts from early 2006, which might lessen viewers' dependence on cable operators. Space experts say the launch is of special significance to Mumbai, the entertainment capital of India.
