Indian government approves policy for rights of disabled

The Union Cabinet has approved a national policy aimed at setting up mechanisms for the promotion and protection of rights of persons with disabilities and to provide them equal opportunity to participate fully in social activities.

The policy, cleared last night by the Cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will also enhance the dignity and self-respect of disabled persons, Information and Broadcasting Minister PR Dasmunsi said.

He said the policy focusses on prevention of disabilities, rehabilitation measures, early detection and intervention and provides for assistive devices.
