The state government is contemplating to amend certain provisions of the Orissa Right to Information Rules-2005 to make the law more effective and citizen-friendly.
This was disclosed by the chief minister, Mr Naveen Patna ik during his meeting with the Magassasay Award winner and National Advisory Council member, Mrs Aruna Roy at the secretariat here today.
During the course of discussion Mrs Roy stressed on the need for enacting the citizen-friendly Right to Information rules and generation of public awareness about the rights granted under the law. She apprised the chief minister about the awareness campaign launched by her organisation in Rajasthan. Listing out the measures initiated by his government for the implementation of the Right to Information Act, Mr Patnaik said the Central law had been made effective from 12 October.
Meanwhile, a state chief information commissioner and a information commissioner had been appointed. Apart from these, an officer for each department had been designate d as public information officer and empowered to provide required information to the public. Similar steps had been taken at the district level also, he informed.
A special drive is being launched to generate public awareness about the Right to Information Act, Mr Patnaik added. Dissemination of information regarding implementation of National Food for Work Programme in the state was also discussed at the meeting.
