Indian state of Assam approves Right to Information Bill

Assam cabinet has approved the set of rules and regulations related to the newly adopted Right to Information (RTI) Bill and okayed appointment of a Chief Information Officer and Information Officer in the state.

Minister of State for Planning and Development Himanta Bishwa Sharma informed reporters that the Chief Information Officer of the state would draw salary at par with the Chief Electoral Officer while the Information Officer's salary will be at par with the state Chief Secretary.

The selection of Chief Information Officer and Information Officer will be done by a panel comprising the Chief Minister as the Chairman, Leader of Opposition and another cabinet minister as members.

In case there is no Leader of Opposition in the state Assemb ly, the leader of the opposition political party having largest representation in the Assembly will be made a member of the selection panel.

The set of rules and regulations related to the Right to Information Act, which has been adopted by Assam is similar to those adopted by the central government.
