Now, official information available for 4 cents only

For just 4 cents, the services and information of 15 departments of the Union Territory (UT) of Chandigarh, India, can be at the service of the people. As per the Jan Sampark Project, which the UT Administration plans to launch in April, 2006, 70 kiosks will be set up in the city’s sectors and villages to provide services and information of 15 UT departments, central government departments and private establishments.

The main departments that will come under the project include police, health, education, electricity, social welfare, industries, tourism, rural development and pollution control board.

According to a senior UT official, these centres will also work as public grievance cells, where residents can lodge complaints against UT officials. That’s not all. You can also book rooms at the UT guesthouse, check Central Board of Secondary Education results, know the status of police and electricity complaints as well as passport applications.

The phone numbers of various departments and train timings will also be provided. Residents can also check contact numbers of plumbers, electricians, masons, domestic help agencies, caterers and transporters.

Villagers can check on various schemes, grants to panchayats and zila parishads and status of developmental works. Forms for landlord/ tenant verification, servant verification, dog and cattle registration, and various industrial schemes will also be available.

Each kiosk will be a pre-fabricated makeshift structure costing Rs 1 lakh (2216 US dollars), said the official, adding that the pilot run of the project will start by February-end. ‘‘These kiosks will be run by a private agency and will remain open from 8 am to 8 pm,’’ he informed.
