Ghana to leverage ICTs for increasing economic growth

Ghana has entered a phase of accelerated economic expansion over the last three years with real GDP growth now averaging 5.2 percent as against a former average of 4.4 percent. Despite this acceleration in growth, the pressures from a more liberalized global economy are mounting; and in response to increased global competition, the Government of Ghana has identified information and communication technology (ICT) services along with agro-processing, tourism and other value-added sectors as key to further economic growth.

To take advantage of the deployment ICT to promote rapid socio-economic development the Ministry of Communication, Government of Ghana, has engaged Hewitt Associates (India) to conduct a study, with the assistance of the World Bank, and the Information for Development Program (infoDev), a multi-donor supported organization housed within the World Bank.

This study will involve conducting an assessment to: (i) develop a framework and action plan for harnessing ICT as a key enabler for improving competitiveness and increasing economic growth; and (ii) create an enabling environment to encourage innovation and to improve Ghana’s ability to compete in the Global ICT/ITES industry.
