CCW to announce guidelines to internet centres

The Cyber Crime Wing (CCW) of the city police is all set to announce the guidelines for internet centres in the wake of e-mail threat to Parliament and US consulates recently.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, CCW, Mr Balu said City Police Commissioner R Nataraj had already instructed for keeping a constant vigil on the 3500-odd internet centres in the city. He had also ordered that strict action should be taken against the owners of the internet kiosks if they violate rules.

As per the new guidelines, notices have been issued to the internet centres asking them to maintain register of customers detail with a concrete evidence of their address through voters ID cards, family ration cards or any other valid proof, Mr Balu said.

As browsing centres were equipped with modernised and high speed communication system through internet, plenty of chances were there for misuse, he said adding that to prevent such a misuse, the cyber crime wing police had framed 12 guidelines.

The guidelines, including banning of browsing in cubicles, children below 18 years could browse only with their parents or some elderly persons, total ban on playing computer games and watching CDs by anybody were sent to the City Police Commissioner for approval, he added.

Mr Balu said it was decided to issue fresh licenses to the internet centres from January one, 2006, and the licenses would be granted only for those who complied with the guidelines.

All police stations were asked to maintain a register furnishing details of entries made by the visitors sent by the internet centres, he said.
