Punjab and Haryana HC yet to appoint public information officers

Even after almost three months of implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act the Punjab and Haryana High Court is yet to designate a public information officer to provide information to citizens requesting information under the Act. The appointment of the information officer was mandatory under provisions of the Act.

The appointment of the information officer was mandatory under provisions of the Act. The RTI Act came into force on October 12, 2005—the 120th day of the passing of the legislation in the Parliament.

The act stipulates that the public authority should publish within 120 days of enactment the names, designation and other particulars of public information officers. The appointment of a public information officer would have equipped people with the right to inspect work, documents, records, besides taking notes, extracts or certified copies of documents. Under the Act, anyone seeking information will have the option of getting it in the form of printouts, diskettes, floppies, tapes, videos cassettes, etc.
