Ghana witnesses dramatic increase in teledensity

The country's total number of telephone lines and mobile subscription, he disclosed, stand at 2,997, 037. This, he said, represents a phenomenal jump from 1.6 million at the end of year 2004. "For those who are technically-minded, Ghana's tele-density now stands at 15%. In other words, 15 out of every 100 people in Ghana have telephones." The Minister noted that in the year 2000, after 110 years of telephony in Ghana, only one out of 100 Ghanaians had telephones. He said the achievement recorded in the year 2005 was consistent with the Ministry's action programme for the year 2005 which targeted a tele-density of fifteen per cent.

The minister explained that his Ministry has overseen the development of policy blueprints for ICT and telecom that meet global standards and are highly acclaimed as such. He said the ministry has put in place, among others, a transparent pro-business policy and regulatory framework to grow the telecommunications sector.
