D.Net: Targets of MDGs, PRSP should emphasise on ICTs
Speakers at the seminar on Access to Information and Development: Role of ICTs said that the targets of the MDGs and PRSP should provide more emphasis on mainstreaming ICTs for leveraging the potential of economy and society leading towards a knowledge society.
The seminar was organised by the D.Net (Development Research Network) in observance of its fifth anniversary.
In the first seminar on Access to Information and Development: Role of ICTs, Keynote speaker Mahmud Hassan said mainstreaming ICTs in poverty alleviation should be seriously ventured by all stakeholders.
In the ICT Fair, D.Net has demonstrated its programmes and research on mainstreaming ICTs in economic development to facilitate various stakeholders including rural poor.
With a programme titled Development and ICT Fair, the anniversary inaugurated by the Chairman of D.Net Taufic A Chowdhury, was attended by its Executive Director Dr. Ananya Raihan, BASIS President Sarwar Alam and Microsoft Bangladesh Country Manager Feroz Mahmud.
D.Net Programme Director Mahmud Hassan said that under the programme- Pallitathya, D.Net creates livelihood contents in Bangla language establishing knowledge centres titled Palli-tathya Kendra in four remote areas of the country for understanding impact and creating viable model for replication.
D.Net has also showcased its award winning project Teletathya: Help Line for the Poor that brings ICTs to the doorsteps of the poor village women in Bangladesh and plans to spread the help line countrywide with a multi-stakeholder partnership model.
Among other programmes, Computer Literacy Programme (CLP), Gunijan, Bangladesh Online Research Network (BORN) and Abolombon have demonstrated improvement of access for rural people.
