South Australia's government has launched a scheme to help boost the economic and social benefits of information and communications technology (ICT) sector.
The Minister for Science and Information Economy Karlene Maywald said the scheme, the Information Economy Agenda for South Australia, would cover five key priority areas viz. ICT infrastructure, industry development, online content, ICT skills, and social inclusion. The document sets out objectives in each of the five areas and outlines current programs.
Among its objectives for infrastructure are ensuring South Australia's competitive position in sectors such as education and research is supported by ICT infrastructure that is affordable and appropriate to their needs. The $9.2 million high-speed fibre broadband network linking research and education sites in Adelaide is cited as a program aiming to achieve this objective. The document also underscores the need for socially inclusive ICTs, so that each and every section of the society benefits from it.
