A special telephone-based passport information system has been activated at the Regional Passport Office (RPO), Chennai, for the benefit of the public. This passport information number (1250244) can be dialled to get general information about the travel document procedures besides finding out the present status of applications submitted/processed in the RPO.
According to Sumathi Ravichandran, Regional Passport Officer, Chennai, this new tele-information system has been made possible with the assistance of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Chennai Telephones. The 24-hour facility has 30 extensions and the logistics support has been provided by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). The automatic speech recognition system is the first of its kind among the passport offices in the country. While the English version is presently available, efforts are on to introduce the Tamil version shortly, she added.
