Bangalore University Library on Monday became the first university e-library in the State by digitising details of its collection of over 3.6 lakh books and providing e-access to general reference material.
Inaugurating the e-library on the Jnanabharathi campus here, Legislative Council Chairman V.R. Sudarshan thanked the university for extending e-library services to the Legislature Library that will be opened on March 2. He said the Legislature Library will be linked to the libraries of Bangalore University and Parliament. Vice-Chancellor M.S. Thimmappa said computerisation of the administration department of the university is being taken up. The examination, finance and library wings have been computerised. He complimented university Librarian P.V. Konnur for completing the e-library project within a short time. Dr. Konnur has completed digitisation of the Goa University Library. Dr. Konnur told presspersons that the homepage of the library website, http://www.library.bub.ernet.in, gives visitors a chance to explore the resources of the library. He said it offers a searchable digital catalogue of 1.3 lakh titles, both on the campus-wide intranet and the Internet. As it is a member of the UGC-Infonet (a University Grants Commission network) programme, the library offers electronic journals extended by INFLIBNET, Ahmedabad, through intranet. Besides digitising its library, the university intends to create a network of libraries of affiliated colleges with the help of the "NewGenLib" library networking software, Dr. Konnur said. The database of all member-libraries will be available on the site, http://BALNET.bub.ernet.in, which will be hosted shortly. Member institutions can demand any book available in any member organisation. Source: The Hindu |
