India: DU logs on to e-learning initiative

N A move that promises to revolutionise the way undergraduate courses are taught at Delhi University, a committee constituted by the Vice-Chancellor is to implement an e-learning pilot project which will enable almost 2,50,000 private and regular students to make up for the ‘‘lack’’ of teachers.

‘‘There is very limited time in the classroom. Though nothing can make up for direct interaction between a teacher and students, with these e-lessons a student has immense flexibility to learn and understand at his own convenience,’’ says Dr Dinesh Singh, coordinator of the committee.

Since the university is already networked, lessons will initially be provided to students who enroll for the programme over the internet with hard copies to follow as per requirement.

‘‘Due to copyright issues we do not plan to give out any CDs right now. We have only tentative plans on that front,’’ says Singh.

The programme will be open to students from all colleges affiliated to the university beside non-formal students. ‘‘Because of the great amount of flexibility it is the private students who stand to benefit the most from this programme’’ says Singh.

The pilot course modules will be for a duration of thirty minutes each and as of now the range of subjects covered will be limited to Physics, Botany, Economics, History and Geography. The lessons will be implemented using various software techniques like ‘‘flash animation/ interactivity/ simulation’’ which will supplement the actual lesson.
