Information Technology based ‘Poultry Expert System’ (PES) is an user-friendly software developed in Visual Basic 6.0 and MS Access on the perceived information needs of commercial poultry farmers. The expert advice on the prioritised information needs was incorporated in the system and presented in various formats viz. audio-visual, video, written etc.
It was exposed to a total of 40 farmers through a Laptop computer in Rangareddy district of Andhra Pradesh. The study revealed that majority of poultry farmers were in the high category of applicability of need-based poultry expert system. The age and information seeking behaviour of the farmers were significantly correlated with the applicability of PES in negative direction, whereas the economic motivation in positive direction.
