Call for global approach to ICT

A recent conference focused on how to ensure all schools, libraries and local governments from around the world could access information technologies within the next decade.

Hundreds of ICT experts discussed how to connect communities by 2015 and bridge the digital divide at the international world telecommunication development conference in Doha in Qatar.

A key aim was to ensure low-cost rural telecommunications would be installed to make broadband and wireless telephony more accessible and affordable to the remotest parts of the world.

According to the Internation Telecommunication Union, ITU, Europe has almost 15 times the internet penetration of Africa, where fewer than 2 per cent use the internet. In the Arab states, too, fewer than six out of 100 people are online.
