Telecom regulator Trai has said that phone firms will have to provide lifetime incoming schemes till the time they continue to operate the services.
Various phone companies have licences to provide cellular/landline services for another 10-15 years, beyond which they can renew them and continue to operate.
Trai has directed phone companies to inform susbcribers of "the month and year of expiry of (their) current licence."
Trai has also clarified that in case of liftime validity plans - under which subscribers pay about Rs 999 and continue to receive calls - phone firms will not hike tariffs.
This condition will also apply for tariff plans which have a component of upfront payment, even if they are not lifetime plans.
