Union Ministry of Urban Development Jaipal Reddy, on 30 December, inaugurated the website of the Global Network on Local Governance (GNLG) at a function organized by the Institute of Social Sciences, New Delhi. Designed and anchored by the Institute, the website contains an array of information on the trends and developments in the field of local governance at the global level. Besides providing information on the State of local governance across the world, the website also proposes to hold online discussion on contemporary issues concerning of decentralization, grassroots democracy, empowerment of disadvantaged groups, etc.
The Global Network on Local Governance is a network of elected local government representatives, democracy activists, academics and socially active NGOs. The network works as a clearing house for information, innovative practices and important event concerning local government. Dissemination of success stories and sharing experiences at regional and global levels are the primary objective of this network.
Before inaugurating the website (http://www.gnlg.org) Reddy responded to a plethora of questions raised by experts, former bureaucrats, policy planners and the faculty of the Institute of Social Sciences. Reddy emphasized the need for a policy which will take a holistic view of urbanization, job creation, poverty reduction and clean environment. For this, the state governments are being asked to development City Development Plans, he announced.
