Stanford joins Internet venture in China

The Stanford University School of Medicine has signed on to a deal that will provide consumers and health professionals in China access to leading medical research in the United States.

Bridgetech Holdings International, a San Diego-based company, plans to create a Web portal that Chief Executive Michael Chermak hopes will serve as the leading destination for Chinese people looking for health-related information. The Texas A&M Health Center and China's Wu Jieping Medical Foundation have also joined the effort.

Paul Costello, Stanford medical school's director of communications, called the school's decision ``the proper, wise thing to do'' insofar as the Web site will serve as a bridge between American and Chinese societies.

``The Internet is now beginning to have new avenues of access within the People's Republic of China,'' Costello said, ``and we thought it was a powerful way to extend our hand across to the people of China and the health professionals of China.''

Costello said Stanford will provide access to university publications and information on a wide variety of topics such as stem cell research and pediatrics.
