In the ADB 39th Annual Meeting in Hyderabad (India), the importance of knowledge in social and economic development was highlighted.

As part of its Annual Meeting, ADB organised the seminar "Knowledge-Based Economies in the 21st Century" that focused on the importance of information and knowledge in a globally networked society.

Presentators in the Seminar included Geert van der Linden, Vice President, Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development, ADB, Rinalia Abdul Rahim, Executive Director, Global Knowledge Partnership, N. Chandrasekaran
Executive Vice-President, Global Head, Sales and Operations, Tata Consultancy Services, Sanjay Mirchandani, Regional Vice President, Enterprise Services, Microsoft Asia Region, Shoji Nishimoto, Assistant Administrator and Director, Bureau for Development Policy, UNDP.

The discussion was moderated by Rinalia Abdul Rahim.

A panel discussion on knowledge-based economies and transforming Asian economies with Bindu Lohani was also the part of the Seminar.

In his welcome note, Geert H.P.B. van der Linden of ADB remarked that "Advances in ICT are giving rise to a global, networked economy, characterized by the mobility of information. They are reshaping our world. To succeed in this increasingly competitive and global economy, countries must have an advanced ICT infrastructure, a highly educated workforce, dynamic research and innovation programs, and a supportive regulatory environment. They must have the know-how to generate, share and use knowledge."

In this discussion, representatives of ADB highlighted the works being done by the regional bank on applying knowledge for development.
