Africa seeks to strengthen science and technology

Most African countries are presently confronted by the challenge to implement the Science and Technology Action Plan championed by the African Union and the National Economic Partnership for African Development.

The framework is part of a plan of action which was mooted by the Sadc Ministers of Technology, who met in Harare a fortnight ago to chart a comprehensive policy to further enhance the role of science and technology in the continentÂ’s economies.

Efforts are being made in the region, particularly in Zimbabwe, to harness technology for rapid economic development, particularly in areas of biodiversity, information and communication technologies (ICT), agriculture and food security and post-harvest and agro-processing technologies.

"Africa has grappled with the challenge of finding ways of applying science and technology (S&T) to advance her economic development.

"Industrialised and newly emerging economies of the world have, in the meantime, taken great strides to harness S&T and have, as a result, accelerated their economic competitiveness, economic growth and generally improve the quality of life of their citizens in an environmentally sustainable manner.
