Information Minister Mutahi Kagwe says the government has set aside 2.1 billion shillings to install communication equipment that would enable rural areas access internet services.
The minister however lamented that Africa lagged behind in internet connectivity.
Kagwe said Kenya was involved in regional connectivity initiatives thorough East Africa Internet Exchange Points, which aims to improve connectivity, reduce cost and enhance service delivery to customers.
The minister said the government had created a conducive environment, which had led to the development of fibre optic connectivity network within major towns in the country and that plans were underway to connect other towns.
Kagwe decried the high cost of communication in Africa and urged African countries to be involved in initiatives that would reduce the cost.
The minister made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary Dr. Bitange Ndemo during the opening of an Information communication and Telecommunication conference at KICC.
