Known as Commonwealth Connects, this programme promotes development in information and communication technology (ICT) among member countries, particularly least developed countries and their communities. The aim is to facilitate local, regional and international linkages through the worldwide web that will enhance access to information, networking opportunities and electronic commerce.
Addressing a gathering of High Commissioners and members of the media at the launch of Commonwealth Connects and its web site, the Secretary-General said the occasion was "a very important landmark".
"Today sees the birth of a global web site for sharing best practice and best policy in ICT programmes and initiatives from right across the Commonwealth," said Mr McKinnon. "The site will be a critical element of building a Commonwealth IT community. Imagine the power of technology to bridge the digital divide to transform individual lives, communities and entire communities."
