Reuters to 'light up' India's farming community

Reuters has launched a mobile phone-based service, called Reuters Market Light (RML), which will connect farmers with various buyers and traders through their mobile phones. Now, Reuters is rolling out its successful pilot project throughout the country.

The RML has been designed to support India's 250 million agricultural community. The Reuters Market Light offers Indian farmers up-to-date, local and customised commodity pricing information, news and weather updates. So far, 7,500 farmers have already signed up for the service.

The RML helps farmers to enhance their crop yields and improve their productivity over a very wide range of produce including onion, cotton, soybean, pulses, pomegranates and oranges. The Reuters Market Light will now introduce a small customer charge of INR 60 per month.

Reuters will soon develop Reuters Market Light, from an information service, to a full mobile news, information and price facilitator. The services to be offered aim to facilitate greater transparency in the Indian agricultural markets, thus allowing individual farmers to increase their productivity and maximise their revenue.
