Kenyan ICT board to train village entrepreneurs

The Kenya Information and Communication Technology (KICT) board has identified 1,500 digital villages' entrepreneurs for training them in 2008.

By the end of 2007, the board will spend US$ 10 million to support the growth of digital villages, and spend US$ 6 million to subsidise bandwidth for colleges countrywide.

The funding is part of the US$ 114.5 million, which would be given to the Ministry of Information to finance the ICT sector through the World Bank's Kenya Transparency and Communication Infrastructure Programme.

For the learning institutions (polytechnics, medical training institutes and universities), the money will be distributed on the basis of student population, existing ICT infrastructure and the amount of bandwidth currently consumed.

Under this initiative, the board will set aside US$ 10 million to support digital villages in terms of training (worth US$ 2 million), bandwidth support (worth US$ 2 million), provide technical support (worth US$ 2 million), and provide digital Villages Revolving Fund (worth US$ 4 million).
