Singapore government to provide information on mobiles

Singapore government has launched a new mobile phone service where the public in the city-state can obtain vital information on the government through short messaging service (SMS).

Singapore's Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) has teamed up with the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) to provide the mobile service which links to the Singapore Government Directory Interactive (SGDI).

The new mobile service served to meet the needs of people who are always on the move and need information quickly, the ministry and IDA said in a joint statement.

It said this initiative was part of the Singapore government's 2010 master plan to increase the reach and richness of government e-services where the public and business users were provided with an alternative mode of access to government services and information.

The public are required to use the 5-digit short code 74688 (or SGOVT) to obtain information such as a public officer's organisation, department, designation and telephone number as listed on SGDI.

Users have to key in space and send to 74688.
