More than 100 million children of primary-school age – two-thirds of them girls - are not in school, with sub-Saharan Africa recording the lowest school rates, the UN Children's Fund said at the start of Global Action Week on Education.

There is still a long way to go in providing HIV services, particularly in preventing mother-to-child transmission - "one of the simplest and cheapest proven prevention methods available" - UNAIDS chief Dr Peter Piot said today at the launch of a progress report on the fight against the epidemic.
