Close to one-fifth of disease in developing countries can be attributed to environmental risks – with unsafe water, poor sanitation, poor hygiene and air pollution as leading risk factors, according to a new World Bank publication.

Financial support by the World Bank for 279 projects in developing countries rose by $2.2 billion in 2005, the international lending body revported this week. In addition, the Bank says their overall lending quality increased due to better preparation, greater selectivity, and more effective supervision.
