Com estúdios instalados em Caracas, Venezuela, e com importante financiamento do presidente Hugo Chávez, teme-se que o canal sirva de plataforma política deste governo. A Radio Nederland entrevistou François Houtart, Responsável do Centro Tricontinental de Leuven e professor emérito na Universidade Católica desta cidade na Bélgica. By charging soldiers alleged to have violated human rights in Iraq with war crimes, the U.K. is taking its international obligations seriously and "blunting the ability of extremists to exploit the Iraq war," political analysts say. The U.S., by contrast, was seen by many as covering up misdeeds at Abu Ghraib prison when it tried nine soldiers only for "infringements of military code."

Warnings of an impending food crisis in Niger, sounded by the U.N. and other aid agencies late last year, met with little response from the international donor community. Contributions are starting to trickle in at the U.N., but by the time enough aid gets through it will have come too late for many, most of them babies and young children, says U.N. Humanitarian Affairs chief, Jan Egeland.

Abdulkadir Yahya Ali, a prominent and highly respected Somali peace activist working to rebuild his country, was assassinated at his home on Monday by unknown gunmen. While the reasons behind his murder are also unknown, political analysts say the crime underscores the growth of lawlessness in Somalia, which has been shattered by fighting and hunger for 14 years.
