25.05.2005 En un año la deforestación de la Amazonía brasileña llegó a uno de los puntos más altos de los que se tiene registro: entre el 2003 y el 2004 la mayor reserva de biodiversidad del mundo perdió más de 26 mil kilómetros cuadrados, un capítulo más en la historia de depredación incesante que ya acabó con 680 mil kilómetros de ese territorio, un área equivalente a Francia y Portugal juntos.

President Fidel Castro of Cuba
24.05.2005 For the first time in Fidel Castro's Cuba, the government allowed a meeting of dissidents to speak their government criticisms freely and openly. The historic meeting, named the "Congress for Democracy in Cuba," was held last weekend and drew 168 participants from all sectors of society, calling for the release of political prisoners, a halt to capital punishment, and a return to multiparty politics.

Palestine’s Hamas Party did well in Last Thursday’s Municipal Elections
13.05.2005 Showing that true democracy cannot be stage-managed, Palestinian municipal elections ended favorably for Hamas. In spite of repeated demands that democratic reform be carried out before beginning peace talks, Israeli Foreign Minister Sylvan Shalom has called on the Palestinian Authority to prevent Hamas from participating in July’s parliamentary elections. What will the rise of a legitimate Hamas party mean for peace in the Middle East?

10.05.2005 La iniciativa, promovida por el presidente brasileño Inácio Lula da Silva, es la continuación de una serie de contactos previos, en los que ya se había puesto de manifiesto el interés de ambos bloques por establecer alianzas comerciales y cooperación en diferentes niveles. De hecho, el MERCOSUR firmó recientemente un acuerdo de cooperación con 6 países árabes, y en la misma línea lo harían otros bloques y otros integrantes de la alianza sudamericana.

10.05.2005 High HIV/AIDS infection rates among soldiers in national armies and peacekeeping forces have ignited debate over compulsory HIV testing in the military.
