OneWorld South Asia held a five-day training programme for young people on computer applications and its effective usage in advocacy and communications at the rural level. The capacity building programme was held for the field functionaries of the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), which is a body of Indian youth, at New Delhi from 18 – 22 December 2006.

The use of ICT in school has the potential not only to improve education, but also to empower people, strengthen governance, open up new market and galvanize the effort to achieve the human development goal for the country. When it comes to computer education in rural primary schools, they still remain the stepchildren of the much-talked-about hi-tech wave that is sweeping the nation.

Despite a massive outpouring of aid, survivors of the 2004 tsunami still find survival with dignity a difficult task--largely because governments and civil society have returned to bureaucratic lethargy. As 2006 comes to an end, OneWorld South Asia dedicates a special section on its Web site to the gritty survivors.

"Tsunamin jälkeiseen jälleenrakennukseen saadusta runsaasta avusta huolimatta ihmisarvoinen elämä ei ole katastrofista selvinneille vieläkään itsestäänselvyys. Syynä on hallitusten ja kansalaisyhteiskunnan kangistuminen byrokratian kaavoihin. Selvinneillä itsellään ei ole jälleenrakennuksessa paljon sananvaltaa. He ovat jumiutuneet jokapäiväisestä elämästä selviämiseen", kansalaisjärjestöt muistuttavat kaksi vuotta tsunamin jälkeen.
