In 2004 the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995-2004) came to an end. Its main merit was that it had centred the attention of the United Nations on the need for awareness of the problems encountered by indigenous peoples the world over. The time has now come to consider new perspectives and strengthen international cooperation in order to meet these peoples’ expectations.

C’est en 2004 que la première Décennie internationale des populations autochtones (1995-2004) s’est achevée. Son principal mérite a été d’avoir porté au cœur de l’attention des Nations Unies la nécessaire prise de conscience des problèmes rencontrés par les peuples autochtones dans le monde entier. Il est aujourd’hui temps de tracer de nouvelles perspectives et de renforcer la coopération internationale afin de répondre à leurs attentes.
