A Unesco-supported three-day conference in Marrakech has concluded that freedom of expression and press freedom are vital to creating a knowledge society under the WSIS framework. The conference was attended by more than 270 representatives of international and regional media groups, NGOs and academic institutions.

Unesco, in cooperation with the government of Kenya and UNDP, has launched the Communication and Information Policy Framework for Kenya. The five-year project aims to strengthen the use of ICTs in Kenyan society and promote its use to build a transparent and accountable public sector in the country.

The International Telecommunication Union is organising a Global Symposium for Regulators from 8–10 December 2004 in Geneva. Heads of national regulatory authorities from developed and developing countries will try to reach a consensus on the best way to achieve convergence and make access to ICTs affordable.

Mongolia’s National Radio and Television Service struggles as it emerges out of 70 years of government control to become an independent public service broadcasting set-up. The network is being helped in the transition by Unesco and the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development.
