ICTs in Africa
05.08.2004 Everyone needs and wants to communicate, and they do so with the tools at hand. 12.07.2004 In the midst of the current enthusiasm for "ICTs for development", it is often forgotten that most rural Africans do not yet even have access to telephones. 08.07.2004 The Panos Global AIDS Programme (GAP) will be running a series of activities and producing resources for the media around the XV International AIDS Conference in Bangkok, July 11th to 16th, for both media attending the Conference and for those who are not. The Panos GAP is a network of Panos offices from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Europe. It aims to support in-depth, balanced media reporting in the South and to provide a Southern perspective to media in the North.

A new Panos report (pdf) asks whether mobile services will become cheap enough for rural needs or are fixed-lines and subsidies really what's needed?

12.05.2004 A study shows despite strong growth in landline and mobile telephony in African cities, rural areas still thirst for cost effective telephone connections.
