Empowering Kenyan farmers
30.01.2004 Rural Kenyan farmers have long been exploited by brokers and resellers who keep them in the dark about market prices. An innovative new service will use the Internet to help farmers make more informed decisions about the sale of their produce. Supported by Canada's International Development Research Centre, "DrumNet" will be accessible to farmers through makeshift rural information kiosks.

Rooftop garden, Montreal
23.01.2004 A form of gardening with great promise for the world's urban poor is being adapted to the rooftops of Montreal. A Canadian NGO is drawing on Mexican and Moroccan expertise to develop a simplified hydroponics system using recycled materials, organic inputs and manual labour. The technique uses far less water than conventional gardening, helps clean air and groundwater, and saves on energy normally used to transport food.
