A new Indian government program to bring medicinal plants into the country's medical and popular mainstream should make the plants safer to use while putting money into the pockets of the villagers who collect them. The program marks a shift away from viewing state-owned forests strictly as timber stock. Canada's International Development Research Centre has been supporting medicinal plant projects in India for more than a decade.

One champion of that position is Abdoulaye Wade - President of Senegal and coordinator of the information and communication technologies aspect of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). On the eve of the World Summit on the Information Society, Mr. Wade offered this exclusive interview for Canada's International Development Research Centre.
