03.10.2002 The mobile and Internet industries have shown remarkably similar growth patterns since the start of the 1990s, but with a lag of about two years for the latter, says a new report released this week by the International Telecommunications Union. The report presents a composite 'Mobile/Internet Index' for over 200 economies and how they are poised to be able to take advantages of ICT advances and convergence.

27.08.2002 The World Summit on the Information Society has convened an Informal Meeting on Content and Themes in September. The purpose of the meeting will be to continue discussions on the principles and themes that should be taken into account during the WSIS and its preparatory process. NGOs, civil society organisations and other international organisations are being invited to participate in the meeting, which will also be attended by UN Specialised Agencies, ITU Sector Members and the business sector.

03.07.2002 The ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is implementing multipurpose community telecentres (MCTs) in partnership with local authorities, companies and communities, as well as multilateral agencies and international NGOs. MCT pilot projects are being deployed in Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Honduras, India, Malawi, Mali, Nepal, Suriname, United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda and Vietnam. 03.07.2002 Developing societies need an ICT model that provides access without necessarily requiring all or most of those capacities associated with the individual. The deployment of community telecentres in developing countries constitutes a promising way to narrow the digital divide and improve the quality of life.
