Throughout the world, those who who save lives by giving blood were honored Tuesday. Inspired by the success of Malawi--who saw a hospital's maternal mortality cut in half after a blood bank was established--the WHO and other organizations are urging developing countries to promote voluntary, unpaid blood donation systems, as these tend to be the most effective.
