28.10.2003 A few years ago, many poor women in the town of Filtu in the Somali region of southeastern Ethiopia survived by begging local shopkeepers to lend them sugar or tea. Thanks to a literacy and loan programme, these extraordinary women have gone from the edge of starvation to a life that has some basic security.

Home-based care in Zambia
15.09.2003 The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia has started a microcredit programme for street children where young people between the ages of 14 and 22 undergo three weeks of training in business and life skills. After the training, they are given loans to start their business, which are to be repaid over three months.

30.07.2003 Canada announced yesterday that it will contribute an additional $1.75-million in humanitarian assistance to Liberia and neighbouring countries. That brings the total Canadian contribution to the region since last year to over $8.4-million. The funding will support initiatives to assist internally displaced persons and refugees.
