Canada's Minister for International Cooperation yesterday heralded the start of a "new era" for volunteers working in developing countries around the world. Minister Aileen Carroll announced that the Canadian International Development Agency will provide close to $210-million over five years to strengthen the impact of 10 volunteer-cooperation agencies.

Canada's Minister for International Cooperation today announced $5-million in new support for the United Nations' humanitarian assistance, reconstruction and transition efforts in Haiti. "Before the political crisis, the humanitarian needs in Haiti were great," Minister Aileen Carroll said. "Now, they are even greater. This support will assist the UN to reach women, men and children in need."

Canada has pledged $5-million to the Special Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Haiti. The funds, announced Friday, will be used to support humanitarian aid distribution, to monitor the human rights situation, to facilitate negotiations between government and opposition parties, and to develop an action plan leading to a timetable for elections. Earlier in the week, Canada also pledged $1.15-million for humanitarian assistance to the conflict- and drought-afflicted country.

They are already one of the world's poorest populations. Now many Haitians are reeling under the effects of drought, weak governance and violent uprisings. This week, Canada announced $1.15-million in new aid for Haiti, to be delivered through the World Food Programme and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
