The results of a three-year scientific study released this month in India show that farmers are worse off financially after they switch to genetically-modified crops. The study showed that farmers who grew Monsanto's genetically-modified Bt* cotton between 2002 and 2005 had higher input costs and lower yields than farmers who grew non-GM cotton varieties.

Statistics Canada has released revised farm income figures for 2003 which showed Alberta's realized net farm income for that year was an astounding negative $412 million. This was the lowest in the country, exceeding even Saskatchewan's negative $264 million realized net farm income in 2003. “Even Newfoundland farmers did better than us,” commented Jan Slomp, Alberta Co-ordinator of the NFU.
