It seems like yesterday that American philosopher Francis Fukuyama proclaimed the "end of history" -- celebrating the collapse of communism and the ascendance of a global neoliberal order. Today John Ralston Saul can credibly proclaim (in his new book, The Collapse of Globalism) the "end of globalization." I'm not quite ready to write globalization's obituary. But a couple of big nails were hammered into the coffin last week, one in Europe, one in China.

Canada has been advertised the same way for 65 years, based on Mounties, mountains, and moose. But Canada is known for different things now: Unmarked envelopes full of cash. Unprecedented rancour and turmoil. Lust. Betrayal. Intrigue. And the Mounties aren't riding horses anymore -- they're chasing ad executives. Instead of lamenting these developments, why don't we capitalize on them?

Women from the Newfoundland and Labrador fishery recently met with provincial NDP Leader Jack Harris to express their concerns regarding the ongoing crab dispute. Whether they are harvesters, plant workers or spouses of harvesters, women are very upset with comments by Premier Danny Williams that "if the summer has to be lost, it has to be lost."
