Prime Minister Paul Martin has asked former New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna to accept the position of Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. and McKenna has accepted. His views on the controversial, divisive issues that exist between the two countries -- especially on the arms industry -- are unknown to most Canadians. Martin should give Parliament the opportunity to review the appointment of McKenna before his final confirmation.

The Union of Concerned Scientists has conducted technical analyses of the U.S. missile defense program for over a decade. Our analysis clearly shows that the missile defense system currently being fielded will not provide protection against long-range ballistic missile attacks. However, the system will have a significant capability to attack satellites in low-earth orbit and may spur the development of anti-satellite weapons by other countries.
