A conference to be held from November 18-20 has the theme "The Alberta we want." Building on "Debt Free Alberta" and the centennial celebrations in Alberta and Saskatchewan, this conference intends to look at both the path Albertans are on at a provincial, federal and global level, and new directions we could go to make Alberta a good place for everyone to live.

Enron, the sponsorship scandal in Ottawa, the state of long-term care in the province of Alberta and recent events at the Alberta Securities Commission all bring into question the effectiveness of existing regulation in protecting the public interest. It has become evident that whistleblowers, too, have a key role to play in protecting the public, but often do so at their own risk. A new report looks closely at some of the key issues that must be addressed when looking at whistleblower legislation, especially the striking of an appropriate balance between the public interest and the duty of fidelity to an employer.

The Alberta Government likes to say that all Albertans share in the Alberta Advantage. But far from being a leader in sustainability and equity, Alberta is heading in the opposite direction. Homelessness and poverty are growing at alarming rates, we lead the country in wealth inequality, average tuition has increased by over 200 per cent since 1990, and the government is actually generating more revenue from gambling than from royalties on the oil sands.
