Features
21.07.2005 Infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is common among some people with HIV/AIDS (PHAs). HCV infects the liver, and once it becomes established in that organ, cells of the immune system infiltrate the liver to try to destroy HCV-infected cells. Unfortunately, in the struggle between the immune system and HCV-infected cells, liver inflammation and damage occurs. The best way to assess the degree of liver damage in HCV infection is by a biopsy—cutting out a tiny piece of this organ. But liver biopsies have several drawbacks. Get more information.

11.07.2005 Vancouver's downtown eastside has a very high concentration of substance users, estimated to be at least 4,000. Thirty per cent of the people who live here are HIV positive and 90 per cent are thought to be positive for hepatitis C. Recently, a study on the acceptance and effect of acupuncture was conducted. It found that regular use of this therapy was linked to a reduction in the craving for and use of street drugs.
