Production of the Aakash tablet in large volumes will further bring down the cost, India’s minister for Telecom and Information Technology said.

India’s Telecom and Information Technology( IT) Minister Kapil Sibal has said that the price of the Aakash tablet will soon come down to 1,900 rupees or 35 Dollars from the present 49 Dollars.

Sibal said in New Delhi on Wednesday that the next version of the tablet will also have a Skype application for making voice calls using an Internet connection that does not necessarily require a SIM card.

The minister said, the government is in the process of getting Cabinet approval for the manufacture of 50 lakh units of the Aakash tablet in India and then float a global tender for its production in the country. He said production of the Aakash tablet in large volumes will further bring down the cost.

Aakash is first in a series of Android-based tablet computers produced by British firm DataWind. The tablet is being manufactured by the India-based company Quad, at their production facility in Hyderabad. The tablet was officially launched as the Aakash in New Delhi on 5 October 2011.

Aakash Tablet was developed as part of the India's aim to connect 25,000 colleges and 400 universities in an e-learning programme.
