The government of India has earmarked Rs 20,000 crore for the establishment of the broadband network up to Panchayat level for improving the quality of governance in Panchayat Raj Institutions.

The Government of India is planning to build a broadband network for e-Panchayats in a bid to address various aspects of broadband services for panchayats.

As part of the plan, the government is setting up a coordination committee and has earmarked Rs 20,000 crore to build the network for e-Governance services for panchayats.

In addition to assessing the requirement of various ministries and government departments to have a pan-India broadband network up to panchayat level, the committee will assess requirements of state governments as well to have pan-state network.
A framework will also be evolved by the committee, headed by Telecom Secretary R Chandrasekhar, to facilitate design of pan-India and pan-state roll out of the broadband network up to the panchayat level.

The network, which will be part of the government’s effort to provide e-Governance at the panchayat level, will facilitate electronic delivery of services.

This effort is a boost to the proposal to establish the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) to provide broadband connectivity to 2.5 lakh gram panchayats.

The Bharat Broadband Network Ltd (BBNL) has been specifically created to implement and roll out the NOFN network across the country.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj initiated the e-Governance scheme called e-Panchayats for improving the quality of governance in Panchayat Raj Institutions, including Gram Panchayats, Block Panchayats and Zilla Panchayats, in the country.
