IFDC in partnership with CropLife Africa Middle East(CLAME) has come up with an effective and innovative solution using Mobile Authentication Service(MAS), which will enable farmers in Uganda protect their crops against counterfeit crop protection products.

Evidence collected across all agribusiness sectors in 12 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa indicates that counterfeit agricultural inputs account for more than 30 percent of all retail agro-input purchases.

Fake crop protection products (CPPs) are huge headache to farmers, producers and authorities as they directly threaten the economy and food security. IFDC has come up with a simple yet effective innovative solution using Mobile Authentication Service (MAS) in partnership with CropLife Africa Middle East (CLAME) and CropLife Uganda.

The pilot program in Uganda uses SMS service to verify whether the product is genuine or not, in which the farmer has to simply scratch the code applied in CPP container and send text message to server for the authentication of the purchased product. Being based on widely used mobile platform and consumers’ familiarity with the scratch and send code system makes this promising intervention feasible and replicable.
